#SocialMediaShutdown flops with hilarious results
The campaign, spearheaded by activist Ntsiki Mazwai, urged users to not buy data or make use of any social media platforms on the day, in a bid to force network providers to lower their data prices.
The campaign kicked off on Wednesday, June 21, and was meant to run for three Wednesdays from 12am-12am. If this failed to elicit a reaction from network providers, Mazwai had urged users to port to a network provider that offered data at a cheaper price.
Twitter users, however, were having none of that, with the hashtag continuing to trend on Wednesday despite the planned "shutdown".
Users took to social media to ridicule the failed campaign, questioning if there was any possibility the shutdown would succeed.
