Reader’s Experience In India: I Was Treated As Inferior By Local People
A Nigerian man shares his own experience of travelling to India and encountering misunderstanding on the part of local people. Is it mere cultural differences or something much more fundamental that lies at the bottom of most interracial conflicts?
I went to India to visit a friend of mine in Mumbai, and I saw Nigerians lavishing and wasting in that country. India as a country is very poor, and the only proffesion booming there is the medical and pharmaceutical line. However, Indians still disrespect African, and take us as shit. Let me share my experience.
I walked into a shopping mall, and encountered a sweet fair Indian girl. I thought it was like in Nigeria, so I was like: “Babe, how are you?” The girl smiled, and answered: “If she’s not fine, what kind I do for her?” I thought it was a joke, but the next moment I saw the youths gathering in the mall, wanting to harass me. The girl told them that I asked her how she was with a smile on my face. I immediately noticed an old, mature man; I thought he would understand my plight, so I told him: “Sir, asking someone how he/she is in Nigeria is like a compliment.” To my greatest surprise, the man yelled at me, and asked why I should ask her such question. He sounded as if it was wrong for me to ask an Indian girl out. The people around me kept dragging my clothes until the security men came to my rescue.
I later met an agile Nigerian guy crying and telling me he wished to see Nigeria again.
My people, there is no place like home. I remember visiting Dubai last year; here I went to a particular area full of wasted and stranded Nigerians with no hope of coming back home.

Some respondents expressed pity and even disapproval concerning the fact that more and more Nigerians were abandoning their motherland for foreign countries, where they hoped to live a better life.
Addicted2Women: Why do people travel out of Nigeria to find greener pastures? I’ve been to five continents out of the seven continents in the world. There is no country better than Nigeria except the USA and Canada. Nigeria is better than the UK and all these countries you run to. Imagine Nigerians going to Dubai, Europe, China. This is a big insult to my dear Nigeria. If you have been to the USA, you will know Nigeria is even better than the USA. They have food stamps (free food), free education, free housing for the poor… In Nigeria we don’t get any help from the government, but everyone is hard-working, and we are the most successful people on earth.
Wiseoldman: The same Nigerians would go to Dubai Marina, snap a picture to fool the other monkeys back home. I have a couple of people asking me for 450k to go to Dubai to hustle. If I don’t give them they will say I’m bad. But the shameful life of slavery, passport stealing hunger Nigerians are living there is not what I would want for my enemy. Unfortunately, some monkeys still do not listen. They still run to Dubai with the money enough to start a good business in Nigeria only to get their passport stolen; most even sell their passports for food… Poo heads!
Dvee2: I have been all round the world, and I must confess there is no place like home. I met a Nigerian in the UK married to an almost 80-year-old woman just to survive. I met Nigerians in Malaysia selling watches and living incredibly poor. At first they claimed to be South Africans, but when they observed I was there as a professional, they started crying and confessing how tough life was. Stay and build yourself up here at home.
Some respondents were obviously not surprised by the situation described, for they were of the opinion that it was Nigerians themselves who were to blame for their tarnished reputation all around the world.
ActivismForever: Hahaha! No one wants to be associated with Nigerians. This country is a mess. No international reputation whatsoever.
Lilkech: I understand anyone cheering his/her nationality. . . But let’s learn to call a spade a spade. The only thing Nigeria can boast of against other countries is lawlessness and corruption.
Mikeapollo: India is a very conservative nation; people there don’t tolerate public display of any affection between people of opposite sex, especially when a foreigner like an African is involved. As per drugs, we Nigerians are known all over India as drug pushers. There is a particular town called Goa near Mumbai… Nigerians are known to be drug pushers, and the populace is often warned to stay clear of Nigerians. The truth hurts, but it must be told. Nigerians have become a big nuisance in many countries around the world because of our loss of values and our crass desperation for money at the expense of every other thing!
A lot of people condemned the author’s behaviour, and advised him to always learn more about what is acceptible and inacceptible in another country.
Irepagbor: People like you deserve beating. My brother lives in India, and you’d better stop tarnishing the image of our guys abroad. Many of them are doing very well. Before you travel, try to get information about the country you are going to visit. The Indian society is very conservative; their girls are tied like Arab girls. It is not allowed to do such in public. They have strong traditions and religious believes.
Trak25: In that same India there are so many Nigerian brothers making it well because they know what they have gone to another country to do. So please brothers, next time when you go outside the shores of your country, try and learn the country’s policy, and don’t condemn the local people, for what you did to them was wrong. We thank God you were not beaten like a thief. God bless Nigeria.
Davidif: First of all, you need to learn the mores and customs of a country before going there. Secondly, you don’t call a girl you just met babe. That’s absolutely tacky (distasteful). You are not in Nigeria, and stuff like that is frowned down in a lot of cultures. I can understand saying hi or hello, but babe? Haba! Thirdly, must you hit on (toast) any beautiful girl you come across? What is with a lot of Naija men that they can’t see a pretty woman and walk away? A Naija lady once told me that Naija men are always toasting, and not once I doubted it. Did it ever occur to you that she might not be single, or that you might not be her type, yet you just walked up to her and called her babe. If you think Indians are bad, go to Saudi Arabia or some parts of the world and try to toast a lady, and see what will happen to you.

Elvisdaniels: Indian men are very insecure people: seeing you with their women they will ambush you with clubs and helmets, and beat you to pulp even in front of the cops… You were lucky they didn’t lynch you; most Nigerians that were killed in Malaysia by the local mobs were beaten by Indians…
Sisnowee: My guy, you are lucky they were not the Indian guys in Malaysia; those ones would not drag your shirt, but use knife to machete your body and draw the map of Africa, if not kill you. Here in Malaysia no darky toasts Indian girls. The ones they leave for darky are those old mamas, the expired ones, and you will see young black handsome guys dating grannies because of money and visas. My brother… you’d better go to church or mosque and do thanksgiving for surviving.
Finally, a lot of respondents blaimed the situation on the fact that Indian men are racist against Africans, and disrespectful to their own women.
Lanchy: Indians have no respect to their or anyone else’s women. India has the highest rate of rape incidents in the world. Rape is in their genes; google Indian rape victims, I hope you have enough credit to browse up to one million hits.
TruthHurts1: I’ve said it many times before that Asians are more anti-Black than white people, but these ignorant Nairalanders won’t listen. Experience is the best teacher. That’s why their companies in Nigeria treat you like garbage.
SirLewis: The world is indeed a funny place. Caucasians look down on Asians, Indians, Africans, Latinos, even aliens. Asians look down on Indians and Africans. Indians look down on Africans. Africans look down on fellow Africans, some calling their fellow brothers monkeys and referring to the very place they live in as zoos. Tell me, why racism won’t continue.
