KZN top cop heads to Cape
Major-General Khombinkosi Jula, the KwaZulu-Natal deputy police commissioner, is the new police chief for the Western Cape.
|||Durban - Major-General Khombinkosi Jula, the KwaZulu-Natal deputy police commissioner, is the new police chief for the Western Cape.
During its first cabinet meeting of the year on Wednesday, the provincial cabinet approved the recommendation made by the acting national police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Phahlane, that Jula replace Lieutenant-General Arno Lamoer.
Lamoer retired after his contract ended in November, following his earlier suspension in April on corruption charges.
Western Cape Community Safety MEC, Dan Plato,
said Jula’s appointment promised to address the policing service delivery constraints that the province had been experiencing.
Plato warned that Jula would have his work cut out for him, because the province remained stretched in terms of resourcing, rising crime levels and the scourge of gangsterism and drugs plaguing communities.
High-ranking sources within the police said Jula was expected to take over the reins next month.
Within police ranks Jula has a reputation for efficient and effective crime prevention, with 28 years of experience.
