Things had gotten so bad for Cruise following his jumping the couch moment on Oprah that the studio was looking to hand off the “Mission: Impossible” series to another actor and hired Jeremy Renner to possibly take the mantle. Fast forward to 2011, when “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol” was finally released, and all was forgiven. ‘Ghost Protocol’ becomes the highest grossing entry in the series by more than $100 million (nearly $700 million worldwide), and any plan for Ethan Hunt to retire became a distant memory.
