The authors concluded that mercenary activity in ancient Greece showed itself as a mass phenomenon for the first time during the Archaic period — in the process of laying down the foundations of the polis structure of Greek society, during the acute political struggle that accompanied this process. As a result, a group of the population has formed, which has lost its position in the social and economic structure of the native polis and is forced to seek a livelihood outside of it. Mercenary activity again manifests itself as a symptom of social ill-being and became widespread in the late Classical period, in a similar situation — when Greek society again finds itself in a state of acute social and political crisis.
