Saratoga Race Course is a classroom for 2-year-olds

When the Saratoga Race Course meet opens Friday, trainer Todd Pletcher will begin rolling out his seemingly endless supply of 2-year-old thoroughbreds.

Pletcher has won 12 Saratoga training titles, including the past six, and much of his success is dependent upon on the success of his juveniles.

Super Saver made his debut at Saratoga in 2009, coming in second; a year later, he gave Pletcher his only Kentucky Derby victory.

Palace Malice earned his first career triumph here in 2012 on his way to more than $2.5 million in career earnings that included a Belmont Stakes win in 2013.

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott cautioned that success at the Spa as a juvenile doesn't necessarily translate into a good career.

Owner Mike Repole, who uses Pletcher as his primary trainer, cheered on Uncle Mo to a 141/4-length victory in his debut at Saratoga in 2010.

Uncle Mo used that as a springboard to champion 2-year-old honors before illness derailed his career.

When you win a maiden race at Saratoga, your next start is probably going to be in a Grade I or Grade II,'' Repole said.
