«Bengal Tiger» Mamun guards rhythmic gymnastic gold for Russia
Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Margarita Mamun secured Russia its fifth consecutive rhythmic gymnastics gold at Olympics on Saturday after compatriot and favourite Yana Kudryavtseva dropped one of her clubs in the individual all-around.Mamun previously competed for Bangladesh, the country of birth of her father, earning her the nickname Bengal Tiger."I was really surprised about Yana making such a mistake because Yana is always very focused and calm, and never nervous," said Mamun, a double silver medallist at worlds championships who finished with 76.483 points on Saturday at the Rio Olympics.Triple world champion Kudryavtseva went on to win silver with 75.608 points, after a top score in her final ribbon routine."At the end of [the clubs] routine, I realised I was not going to win the gold medal. That‘s why emotionally I was a little bit more relaxed and I was competing for myself, my coach and the spectators," she said about her ribbon performance.Bronze went to Ganna Rizatdinova of Ukraine after she garnered 73.583 points.
