Armenia, Iran establishing closer cooperation in customs sector

A delegation of Iranian customs officials on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Armenian State Revenue Committee to establish a closer cooperation on the joint customs border.

The deal proposes a real time information exchange between the two countries’ respective customs checkpoints.

“The implementation of every single clause of the memorandum will allow us to realize, within short timeframes, the idea behind the ‘one window’ concept. It will facilitate both the activities of external entrepreneurs and the entry procedures for the neighboring country,” Head of the Committee Vardan Harutyunyan said at the ceremony.

To promote stronger economic ties, the document also proposes increasing transparency by making the information on the customs legislation available on official websites.

Also, help desks will be available at the border checkpoints of Meghri (Armenia) and Norduz (Iran) to inform Iranian and Armenian citizens of the customs procedures in the neighboring country, reports the Committee’s press service.

“The customs sector has a direct impact on the development of the trade-economic relations between Armenia and Iran.

“The lifting of entry permit between the two countries will boost tourism and increase turnover, as well as simplify the transit delivery [of goods]. Armenia, being an EEU member state, can also open Iran’s gateway to the market,” said the head of the Iranian Customs Service.
