Thousands protest in Nordic capitals in support of US Women's March

Stockholm (dpa) - Several thousand people gathered on Saturday in central Stockholm to express support for women‘s rights and human rights, and in solidarity with the so-called "Women‘s March" in Washington, the day after US President Donald Trump was inaugurated.Protesters later marched from the city centre to the US Embassy. Some carried placards that read "Tiny hands off the nukes," "When they go low, we go high" and "Love not hate makes America great."Statements were given by members of feminist and women‘s rights groups, by several political parties, by pressure groups like Amnesty International and Greenpeace, and by the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Rights.Several speakers expressed concern over remarks Trump made during and after his presidential election campaign.Birgitta Ohlsson, a member of parliament for the opposition Liberals, said: "We should not accept that [Trump] has lowered the threshold for what is decent in the global political discourse."Other speakers said that some of his remarks and proposed policies were misogynistic, racist and homophobic.Similar protests were held in the capitals of neighbouring Norway, Finland and Denmark.
