Three years ago, Universal released the $15 million dollar "Mama" in cinemas and probably didn't expect the horror flick starring Jessica Chastain to do much of anything. But the film was a massive hit, tallying up $146 million worldwide, making the studio eager for a followup. But co-writer and director Andrés Muschietti was cool on the idea.

"We sort of wore out the subject matter…I never thought this could continue. Sequels are always tricky. I know how studios think but I don’t see ‘Mama’ as something you can exploit because you’re screwing with the original," he said a few weeks after the film opened. "I’m really hoping to jump into some other movies right now." Indeed, he's now attached to helm "It" for Warner Bros., among other things, but Universal didn't let their enthusiasm for a sequel die, and now they are moving things forward.
