Cape Town – Famous Brands, the parent company of Debonairs Pizza, on Wednesday said they had laid charges, including that of attempted murder, against a motorist who had allegedly knocked into a Debonairs delivery staffer riding a scooter in an apparent racist attack in Port Elizabeth.

Famous Brands spokesperson Arlene Helberg said: “With regard to Facebook footage of a motorist deliberately bumping into a Debonairs Pizza delivery driver in a racially motivated incident, Famous Brands’ management would like to repeat statements made to date and provide an update on the matter.”

Helberg confirmed that charges of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving, as well as malicious damage to property had been lodged with the Humewood police.

“Famous Brands’ management is co-operating fully with the SAPS in this matter,” said Helberg.

According to Helberg, subsequent to the incident, the delivery driver – Omoefe Acboriyede – had been afforded “compassionate leave to enable him to fully recover”.

On Monday, an Afrikaans-speaking bakkie driver and suspect recorded his attack on Acboriyede who could be seen in the mobile footage on his Debonairs Pizza motorcycle. The suspect is heard planning his attack while calling Acboriyede a “k****r”. When the light turned green for both the suspect and Acboriyede, the suspect – according to Famous Brands – bumped their employee’s motorcycle.

Helberg said Famous Brands’ management were again making a public request for the suspect to contact the company and/or the police.

“Famous Brands’ management will be instituting legal action against the motorist as soon as his identity has been established and verified,” said Helberg.

“To repeat our original statement: Famous Brands’ management is outraged by this incident and condemns any form of racist behaviour in the strongest terms,” she said.

“An update on the status of this matter will be issued as soon as further progress is made in this investigation. In the interim and until such point, no further statements will be issued.”
