Cape Town – A man believed to be in his early 30s is lucky to be alive after his car was ripped to pieces in a crash on the N1 out-bound near the Koeberg Interchange, Cape Town, Western Cape paramedics said on Saturday.

“At approximately 3am this morning [Saturday] paramedics arrived on [the] scene where they found debris from the vehicle scattered across the road,” ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

The car’s engine was ripped from its mountings and found several metres away.

“The driver of the vehicle was found sitting near the vehicle. Upon assessment paramedics found that he only sustained moderate injuries. He was treated on [the] scene and transported to New Somerset West Hospital for further care.”

The cause of the accident was not known. Emergency workers in Cape Town attended to several incidents after heavy rainfall in the area. Local rescue services also attended the scene, Vermaak said.
