Germany’s Merkel promises legislation to ward off diesel driving bans

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, campaigning for her Christian Democrats (CDU) to retain control of the crucial state of Hesse in next Sunday's election, promised legislation to ward off the threat of air pollution leading to driving bans. Speaking at a news conference on Sunday evening, Merkel said it would be disproportionate to ban dirty diesel cars from the road in places like Frankfurt, Hesse's largest city, where nitrogen emissions limits were only marginally exceeded

Jordan says it won’t renew peace treaty land deal with Israel

By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - Jordan said on Sunday it would not extend the 25-year deal that allows Israel to use two tracts of territory along its border just as Israel said it was still planning to negotiate an extension. Much of the land in Baquora in the northwestern part of the kingdom and Ghumar in the south is used by Israeli farmers, some of whom were given private land ownership rights and special travel rights under a 1994 peace treaty between the two countries.

Chilean court orders Catholic Church to pay damages over abuse: report

By Aislinn Laing SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chile's Court of Appeal has ordered the office of Santiago's Archbishop to pay $450 million pesos ($650,000) to three men who alleged they were sexually abused for decades by Chilean priest Fernando Karadima, a local newspaper said on Sunday. Citing a copy of a leaked judgment, La Tercera said the three judges who heard the case on Thursday found in favor of an appeal for "moral damages" against the church for allegedly covering up the crimes.

At least 14 killed in violence in eastern Congo’s Ebola zone

KINSHASA (Reuters) - Unidentified gunmen killed at least 14 people, including two health workers, on Saturday in an area of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where militia violence has hampered efforts to contain an Ebola outbreak, authorities said. The latest outbreak of the deadly disease in Congo has killed 152 people, mostly in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces that have been the epicenter of armed rebellion and ethnic killing since two civil wars in the late 1990s. Floods kill firefighter in southern Spain

CAMPILLOS, Spain (Reuters) - A firefighter was found dead in the southern Spanish province of Malaga on Sunday, the fire service said, after heavy overnight rain swept through streets and forced hundreds of people from their homes. In the town of Campillos, cars were borne along the streets by the water and left in wrecked piles after the flood subsided.
