Leftist militant Battisti to be sent back to Italy after arrest in Bolivia

By Stephen Jewkes MILAN (Reuters) - Italian former leftist guerrilla Cesare Battisti, convicted of murder and on the run for almost four decades after escaping prison, will be extradited to Italy after being arrested in Bolivia, officials said on Sunday. "Cesare Battisti will be back in Italy in the coming hours on a flight from Santa Cruz to Rome," Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte tweeted after a phone call with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Morocco’s Amazigh want their new year to become official holiday

By Ahmed Eljechtimi RABAT (Reuters) - Hundreds of people gathered in Morocco's capital Rabat late on Saturday to mark the start of the Amazigh new year with a sit-in calling on the state to make the celebration a national holiday. Home to North Africa's biggest Amazigh, or Berber, population, Morocco long marginalised its language and culture in favour of Arabic and French, giving rise to an Amazigh identity movement which has steadily gained influence.

Congo should recount presidential election vote: Southern African bloc

By Giulia Paravicini KINSHASA (Reuters) - An influential African bloc urged Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday to recount votes cast in its disorganised presidential election, raising pressure on Kinshasa to ensure the legitimacy of the next government and avert widespread violent unrest. The Dec. 30 vote was supposed to mark Congo's first uncontested democratic transfer of power in 59 years of independence, and the beginning of a new era after 18 years of chaotic rule by President Joseph Kabila. Snowstorm blankets mid-Atlantic U.S., at least seven dead in Midwest

(Reuters) - A massive winter storm rolled eastward to the mid-Atlantic United States on Sunday after dropping more than a foot of snow on parts of the Midwest and killing at least 7 people in highway accidents on Saturday. The weather system, which started as rain from Mexico but has since turned into snow, is forecast to affect an 1,800-mile (2,900 km) swath of the United States from Colorado to the mid-Atlantic. Millions of Americans in ten states and Washington, D.C.
