In Bukele's El Salvador, shrinking space for sexual diversity

Here, the couple say, they do not fear discrimination in a society they feel is becoming increasingly hostile to sexual diversity under President Nayib Bukele. Under a crucifix hanging below a row of rainbow flags, about 15 members of the LGBTQ community chant, receive communion and listen to passages from the Bible. "It's a safe space where I can go with my partner, be welcomed without being judged," Turchkeim, a 30-year-old psychologist, told AFP of the "respite" from rising intolerance. Bukele... Animal crossing: Highway bridge aims to save California's cougars

The animal, also known as a puma or a cougar, is the region's apex predator, and spotting them is something of a hobby for locals. A 2013 photograph of the much loved -- but unimaginatively named -- P-22 in front of the Hollywood sign cemented the creature's place in the popular imagination. But the picture also highlighted the difficulties faced by a species whose habitat has been invaded by people, as well as from the growing risks of extreme weather events driven by human-caused climate change. France 'breathing again': 'There is a way and it depends on our collective ability to move forward'

Macron took a gamble to call legislative elections after the RN trounced his centrist alliance in June 9 European elections. Three-time presidential candidate Marine Le Pen had hoped her RN party would go on to win an absolute majority in the national polls and even form a government. But that dream was dashed after the left and centre rallied together to ensure there was only one anti-RN candidate in most districts. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on the stunning election outcome... Читать дальше...

Moroccans march in pro-Palestinian rally

"Gaza is not alone," chanted the protesters during the event which saw the grouping of leftist parties and Islamist movements. The protesters took to the streets of the coastal city after reports last month of an Israeli ship's docking in Tangier port. Coming from the United States, the ship made a pit stop in Tangier on June 19, according to Israeli media. Moroccan authorities have yet to confirm the reports. On June 24, the kingdom announced the sending of 40 tonnes of medical aid to the population of Gaza... Читать дальше...

France’s leftist New Popular Front wins a shock victory – but now the hard part begins

France's New Popular Front has won the largest number of seats in the final round of snap parliamentary elections, leaving behind the remnants of President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist camp and the far-right National Rally trailing in third place. It’s a staggering result for a closely fought election that has left the country without a clear candidate for prime minister – and the hastily assembled broad leftist coalition without an absolute majority that would allow it to push through its ambitious programme.

Following election thriller, will France have world's most democratically representative parliament?

An alliance of French left-wing parties was on course Sunday to beat the far right and President Emmanuel Macron's coalition in a stunning outcome to parliamentary elections that plunges France into new political uncertainty. No one group won an absolute majority in the second round of the poll, which leaves France without any clear path to forming a new government three weeks before the Paris Olympics. With no group even close to the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority to form a government... Читать дальше...

France 'avoided worst' with far right loss, Scholz's party spokesman says

A senior member of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's party said Sunday that France had "avoided the worst" after projections showed the far right losing the second round of legislative elections. Macron is "politically weakened" because his group lost a significant number of seats but "retains a central role" with no party claiming an outright majority, Schmid, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) foreign policy spokesman in the German parliament, told the Funke press group. FRANCE 24's Nick Holdsworth reports.

French far right loses snap elections: National Rally a party that ‘scares’ people

The French far right led by National Rally (RN) on Sunday, contrary to expectations, lost France's second round of legislative elections according the projections. While RN has managed to improve its image after Marine Le Pen took over the party from her father and founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, the far right party remains a party that “scares quite a lot of French people”, FRANCE 24's Philip Turle said in an analysis.

The images of Jaminet come from an Instagram story made by the 20-time international, who came off the bench in France's first Test win over Argentina on Saturday in Mendoza. "I promise, the first Arab I see on the road, I'll headbutt him," Jaminet is filmed as saying. Toulon's Jaminet played seven minutes and kicked a penalty as an inexperienced France beat Argentina 28-13 in the opening game of their South American tour.
