Shock, disbelief after Trump vows to 'take over' Palestinian territory

US President Donald Trump's plan to take over "ownership" of the Gaza Strip prompted shrugs and bewilderment in the streets of Jerusalem on Wednesday, says FRANCE 24's Mark Owen, pointing to similar views being voiced by members of Trump's entourage in recent months. "The concept goes back to what Jared Kushner floated back in March, when he talked about the potential of waterfront property in the Gaza Strip, and you can imagine a Trump Hotel (...) sprouting from the ruins of Gaza," he explains.

YouTubers causing monkeys to attack tourists at Cambodia's Angkor Wat

The agency that runs the UNESCO-listed site warned visitors to steer clear of the growing gangs of "aggressive" macaques that live around the sprawling complex of ruins and have been biting tourists. The macaques are native to the lush forests that surround Angkor Wat, but Apsara National Authority said human interaction -- particularly by people filming content to post online -- had changed their behaviour. A small number of YouTubers regularly fed monkeys to create videos and this has "changed... Читать дальше...

No new clothes: S. Korean climate activist targets hyperconsumption

While looking at the ultra-cheap padded jacket at an H&M shop in the United States, where she was working at the time, Lee asked herself how any item of clothing could be sold so cheaply. The 30-year-old embarked on a deep dive into fast fashion production methods and was horrified at the human, social and environmental toll hyperconsumerism is having on the planet -- and on the mental health of women who make and buy cheap clothes. "I used to buy one new outfit each (working) day of the week," Lee told AFP... Читать дальше...

Nissan shares fall as reports say Honda merger talks off

The Nikkei business daily and other local media earlier said Honda had proposed making Nissan its subsidiary, instead of the previous plan to integrate under a new holding company. "Strong opposition" within Nissan to this proposal was behind its decision to withdraw from the talks, the Nikkei said. Private broadcaster TBS published a similar report. Discussions on setting up a holding company were launched in December but faltered as the two companies disagreed on the integration ratio and other conditions, the newspaper added. Читать дальше...

Tatum, White shine as Celtics down Cavs

In a heavyweight showdown between the Eastern Conference-leading Cavaliers and the second-ranked Celtics, Boston produced a clinical display to seal a deserved win. Tatum led the Boston scoring but it was the Celtics' balanced offense that proved too much for the Cavaliers. Tatum was one of five Celtics players to finish in double figures, while Derrick White's 20-point contribution -- which included six three-pointers -- played a key role in securing a Boston victory. Kristaps Porzingis finished... Читать дальше...

Google pledge against using AI for weapons vanishes

Revised AI principles were posted just weeks after Google chief executive Sundar Pichai and other tech titans attended the inauguration of US President Donald Trump. When asked by AFP about the change, a Google spokesperson referred to a blog post outlining the company's AI principles that made no mention of the promises, which Pichai first outlined in 2018. "We believe democracies should lead in AI development, guided by core values like freedom, equality, and respect for human rights," read an... Читать дальше...

African football has the platform for historic World Cup success

Morocco's surprise run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals sparked hopes that such a moment is not far off. Benjamin Balkin, though, thinks Eyeball, the digital platform he co-founded in 2020, could be the determining factor in ensuring that happens as it provides a shop window for talent which would previously have been missed. Balkin cheerfully describes himself as a "failed footballer" having played in the academy of French club Monaco but was told he would fall short in the senior ranks. As a Monaco ballboy... However, without the unglamorous work from the likes of prop Jean-Baptiste Gros, Sevens Olympic gold medallist Dupont will find it hard to shine at Twickenham, where France have tasted victory only once since 2007. Gros is likely to start this weekend's second round game as the joint tournament favourites aim to continue their march to the title. "It doesn't bother me to go under the radar," Gros told AFP on Monday. "I play this sport to have fun and enjoy myself. Everything that comes with playing rugby... Читать дальше...

Race against time to complete contested Milan-Cortina bobsleigh track

Twelve gold medals will be awarded for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton, events held on a track which is costly and difficult to build and has frequently caused headaches for organisers of the 2026 Winter Games. In Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomite mountains, where the women's alpine skiing events will also be held, 190 workers are working around the clock, seven days a week, to deliver a winding 1,650-metre (5,413-foot) track with 16 bends and complex refrigeration systems in time for an approval deadline in March. The 22-year-old will be watching from the bench as Inter try to join Napoli at the top of the table in the remaining 74 minutes of a fixture stopped by his collapse in front of distraught players and fans, who watched in horror as medics dashed onto the Stadio Artemio Franchi pitch and rushed him to Florence's Careggi hospital. Syria's Alawites mourn their dead after revenge attacks

After Islamist-led rebels ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad on December 8, the new authorities sought to reassure minorities in multi-ethnic multi-confessional Syria that they will be protected. But Alawites, from a branch of Shiite Islam, have an acute fear of reprisals because of their connection to the Assad clan, which recruited from and favoured its own religious community for military and public sector positions during more than half a century of iron-fisted rule. Ezzedine said foreign jihadists set up near the family olive groves... Читать дальше...
