Coventry, 41, became the most powerful single figure in sport after sweeping aside her six rivals in the first round of voting on Thursday. She is also the first woman to lead the Olympic Movement. Swimming great Coventry -- who won seven of Zimbabwe's eight Olympic medals, two of them gold -- has always been hurt by suggestions that she does not fully represent Zimbabwe or Africa because she is white. "I was born there," she said in January. "My mother was born there. My grandmother was born there. Читать дальше...

England Women's coach Jon Lewis sacked after Ashes drubbing

The former England bowler, who also oversaw a disappointing campaign at last year's T20 World Cup, was dismissed after a wide-ranging review by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Clare Connor, managing director of England Women, thanked Lewis for his work since he was appointed in November 2022 but admitted results in the T20 World Cup and the multi-format Ashes had been poor. "Under his leadership the team held off Australia to draw a thrilling 2023 Women's Ashes -- attracting record crowds with an entertaining brand of cricket -... Читать дальше...

Mehdi Nemmouche has been indicted over allegedly holding the French reporters hostage for the Islamic State jihadist group from June 2013 to April 2014. All four journalists during the trial said they clearly recognised Nemmouche's voice and manner of speech as belonging to a so-called Abu Omar who terrorised them and made sadistic jokes while they were in captivity. But Nemmouche has denied ever being their jailer, only admitting in court he was an IS fighter in Syria. From the beginning of the trial last month... Читать дальше...

Trump denies reports Musk to receive 'top secret' China briefing

The reports, first published by The New York Times, fanned concerns about the SpaceX and Tesla chief's influence in the White House as an unelected tycoon who has become Trump's closest advisor. The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post also reported on the apparent briefing. Trump, who often brands media reports he dislikes as... Читать дальше...

"Turkey will not surrender to street terror," Erdogan said as the leader of the main opposition CHP called for nationwide protests later on Friday over a move it has denounced as a "coup". "Let me say it loud and clear: the street protests that the CHP leader has called for are a dead end," Erdogan warned. The 53-year-old mayor -- Erdogan's main political rival -- was arrested on Wednesday, just days before he was to be named the CHP's candidate for the 2028 presidential race. The move sparked... Japan panel drafts response plan for Mount Fuji eruption

The guidelines were issued to the region's more than 44 million residents by experts, convened by the Cabinet Office. The panel also called on municipalities and households to maintain emergency supplies like food and water in case the 3,776-meter volcano were to erupt. Mount Fuji last erupted in 1707. In the worst-case scenario, a massive eruption of Japan's highest peak could spew 30 centimetres of ash (nearly 12 inches) or more over Tokyo, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) northeast of the volcano, the panel said. Court rules against K-pop group NewJeans in contract dispute

The group made headlines in November by announcing their decision to leave ADOR, whose parent company HYBE is behind K-pop sensation BTS. The label later filed for an injunction to maintain its status as the managing agency of NewJeans, requesting that the Seoul Central District Court prohibit the group's members from engaging in independent commercial activities. Red Bull's Horner fondly recalls 'heart and soul of party' Eddie Jordan

The charismatic Jordan, who died Thursday aged 76, achieved rare success as an independent team owner in the fiercely competitive world of Formula One that he termed mischievously "The Piranha Club". Jordan F1 made their debut in 1991, winning four grands prix in 15 years in the sport. The blunt-talking Irishman sold his team to Midland in 2005 and it has gone through several incarnations and now races as Aston Martin. He remained a prominent figure in motorsport through his work as a TV pundit. Читать дальше...
