Minister publishes amendments to financial provisioning regulations for mine closure

Environmental Affairs Minster Nomvula Mokonyane has gazetted additional amendments to the Financial Provisioning Regulations for the rehabilitation and remediation of environmental damage caused by exploration and/or mining activity. The regulations stipulate the manner in which mining rightholders and mining permit holders must provide for and then conduct rehabilitation of the environmental impacts incurred by their activities.

Villagers in Peru decide to impose new road blockade on Las Bambas mine-ombudsman

The indigenous community of Fuerabamba in Peru decided to impose a new road blockade on MMG's Las Bambas copper mine after talks with the company over compensation broke down, a representative of the ombudsman's office said on Tuesday. The community planned to start the blockade at midnight on Tuesday, the representative, Americo Contreras, said by phone, citing a document from government officials who mediated the talks that ended without a solution late on Monday.

Zambian court appoints provisional liquidator of Vedanta's KCM

Zambia's High Court on Tuesday appointed a legal firm as a provisional liquidator of Vedanta-controlled Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), according to a court document seen by Reuters. The document named Zambian law firm Lungu Simwanza & Company to oversee KCM a day after the president said Zambia planned to strip the company of its mining licence and bring in a new investor.

Sirius says open offer closes over-subscribed

The placing and open offer through which Sirius Minerals aimed to raise about $400-million, for the potash mine, in North Yorkshire, has been over-subscribed, the London-listed company reported on Tuesday. The company raised $425-million in the offer, which formed part of the $3.8-billion funding package that Sirius announced at the end of last month to fund the construction of its Woodsmith polyhalite mine.

BHP polishes EV penetration forecast

Mining major BHP has polished its forecast for the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) and what impact the shift to electric mobility will have on the copper and oil markets over the coming decades. The diversified mining company, which last week reaffirmed its commitment to supply the EV markets, has raised its ‘low case’ expectations for the market share of EVs to at least 7% of the light vehicle fleet by 2035 and 27% by 2050. This is up from the miner’s previous estimate of at least 5% and 21%, respectively.

Nickel Mines finds funding, amends Ranger deal

ASX-listed Nickel Mines has secured an $80-million funding package from Decent Investment International Private, an associate of the company’s operating partner Shanghai Decent Investment, to fund its increased stake in the Ranger nickel project, in Indonesia. Nickel Mines in April this year announced plans to increase its shareholding in the Ranger project from 17% to 60%, ahead of first production, at a cost of $121.4-million.

Adani commits to invest Abbot Point water monitoring equipment

The Queensland government has ceased court proceedings against Indian major Adani relating to stormwater release during Cyclone Debbie in 2017, with Adani agreeing to invest in water monitoring equipment at the Abbot Point Operations. The Department of Environment previously claimed at the Abbot Point Operations released more floodwater to nearby wetlands than permitted during the cyclone.

FYI nearing completion of pilot plant

The share price of junior FYI Resources was bumped by more than 5% on Tuesday on news that the company high purity alumina (HPA) plant, in Western Australia, was nearing first production. “The pilot plant is another key element for our disciplined HPA strategy that will ensure the Cadoux kaolin project is de-risked towards production,” MD Roland Hill said.

Fresnillo warns of 'more challenging' 2019

Fresnillo said on Tuesday the current year would be more challenging than 2018 as a number of industry variables were "working against" the precious metals miner. The company, which posted a 15% drop in first-quarter silver production last month, said it was "disappointed" not to meet its long-term silver output target and that it was taking action to address this "in a number of ways".

De Beers records lower sales amid macroeconomic uncertainty

The value of De Beers’ rough diamond sales for the fourth cycle of this year fell year-on-year “against a backdrop of macroeconomic uncertainty”, CEO Bruce Cleaver said on Tuesday. Sales decreased to $415-million, compared with $554-million in the fourth sales cycle of 2018.

Brazil iron-ore exports in rise in first half of May amid higher prices

Brazil's iron-ore exports rose sharply in the first half of May, data showed on Monday, recovering from a more than seven-year low in April, as higher prices encouraged sellers to close more deals internationally. Until May 17, Brazil exported 16.2-million tonnes, according to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex), which is part of the Ministry of the Economy. In the whole of April, Brazil exported 18.3-million tonnes, as the impact of miner Vale's Brumadinho dam collapse weighed.

Vale's Gongo Soco mine dam has up to 15% chance of bursting -Brazil official

Brazilian miner Vale's tailings dam in the town of Barao de Cocais in Minas Gerais has up to a 15% chance of breaking, the state's environment secretary said on Monday. The dam at Vale's Gongo Soco mine is about 64 km from Brumadinho, where a tailings dam collapse unleashed a torrent of toxic mud in late January, killing more than 240 people.
