Bluejay applies for exploration licence at ‘least talked about’ project

Aim- and FSE-listed Bluejay Mining, which owns the Dundas mineral sands project, has applied for an additional exploration licence at the Kangerluarsuk zinc/lead/silver project, in Greenland. The new application covers an area surrounding the existing Kangerluarsuk licence area in central-west Greenland, expanding its holding more than fivefold to 692 km2. Together, these areas returned historic surface samples of 41% zinc, 9.3% lead, 1.2% copper and 596 g/t silver, combined, more than 50% metal.

PFS for Dougou extension project on track

Potash exploration and development company Kore Potash, whose flagship asset is the 97%-owned Sintoukola potash project, in Congo-Brazzaville, has confirmed that the prefeasibility study (PFS) for the Dougou extension project is on track to be completed in April 2020, within budget and with potentially improved financial outcomes. Digital monitoring can drive improvements in battery metals mining conditions

A first-ever long-term artisanal and small-scale (ASM) mine site monitoring data study by supply chain auditor RCS Global Group’s Better Mining team has revealed the challenges in ethical battery supply chains. The team assessed 12 months of data from RCS Global’s new Better Mining platform, which uses mobile technology to permanently monitor ASM sites in cobalt, copper, gold, tin, tantalum and tungsten and deliver risk and impact information directly to automotive and technology clients.

Workers at Escondida to walk off job Tuesday

The union of workers at BHP's Escondida copper mine will hold a day-long strike on Tuesday in a show of solidarity with protests in Chile, the union president told Reuters on Monday. Violent clashes, arson attacks and looting in cities throughout Chile led to at least seven deaths over a weekend marked by chaos in the world's top copper producing country.

Merafe reports lower production in Q3 in line with cutbacks

JSE-listed Merafe Resources' attributable ferrochrome production from the Glencore-Merafe Chrome Venture for the third quarter ended September 30 was 60 000 t, 29% lower than the 84 000 t produced in the third quarter of 2018. The company on Monday attributed the lower production to increased planned maintenance, increased community unrest and production cutbacks in response to market conditions during the third quarter.

India steps up efforts to woo global coal investors

Close on the heels of opening up commercial coal mining to overseas resource majors, India’s Coal Ministry is framing a supporting policy framework to woo global resource companies at the forthcoming coal block auctions. “We have opened up the coal mining sector allowing 100% foreign direct investments (FDI). We are formulating various policies to attract foreign investors and private sector within the country,” Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a statement.

Indian aluminium producer forced to shut smelting pots owing to coal shortage

Indian State-run National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco) is facing an acute shortage of coal supplies of up to almost 50% of its daily requirement to fuel its 1 200 MW of captive thermal power plant, risking the closure of its smelting potlines. Nalco, which operates a 460 000 t aluminium smelter at Angul in the eastern state of Odisha, sources its coal requirements from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) - an operational subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) - whose mines are also in the eastern state.

Political risk is alive in Latin America as protests spread

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Saturday became the second leader this month to declare a state of emergency, his hand forced by violent protests in South America’s wealthiest country after an increase in transportation costs. In Ecuador, unrest blew up after President Lenin Moreno ended fuel subsidies.

Petra progresses with throughput improvements, on track to meet guidance

London-listed Petra Diamonds is on track to achieve its full year production target of about 3.8-million carats, despite a challenging diamond market. CE Richard Duffy on Monday stated that the company’s cashflow would benefit from the sale of an exceptional 20.08 ct Type II blue diamond recently recovered from its mine in Cullinan, South Africa, and implementation of the company’s Project 2022.

Lithium Chile cleared for Turi exploration

The Chilean Environmental Impact Assessment Authority has approved TSX-V-listed Lithium Chile’s Turi exploration drilling programme, paving the way for the rig to be mobilised to the property in the first week of November. Turi covers 13 000 ha, or about 95% of the Salar de Turi, in the heart of the Chilean side of the lithium triangle.

BHP aims for 100% renewables in Chile

Mining major BHP has inked four new renewable power agreements to meet the energy demands from its Escondida and Spence copper operations, in Chile, with the miner saying that it aimed to source 100% of the two operations’ energy requirements from renewable sources by mid-2020. “These new renewable energy contracts will increase flexibility for our power portfolio and will ensure security of supply for our operations, while also reducing costs and displacing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions,” said...
