Galileo acquires copper exploration assets in Botswana

Aim-listed Galileo Resources has completed the acquisition  of 100% of Botswana- incorporated Crocus-Serv, having satisfied the conditions precedent in terms of an earlier heads of agreement (HoA). Crocus's assets include 21 exploration prospecting licences (PLs), 19 of which are in the highly prospective Kalahari Copper Belt (KCB) and two of which are in the Limpopo Mobile Belt (LMB) in western and north-eastern Botswana, respectively.

Minerals Council to host weekly Covid-19 update sessions

The Minerals Council South Africa will, from May 22, be providing weekly online updates on the mining industry’s position on Covid-19. During these sessions, the council and, in some instances representatives of member companies, will provide a short update on the current status of events and the initiatives in place and answer questions.

Menar's Kangra placed on care and maintenance

Thermal coal miner Kangra has signed agreements with labour representatives to place its mine in Mpumalanga on care and maintenance. Menar, as the operator, initiated the consultations with labour in response to, besides other factors, the damage to local and international markets caused by Covid-19-related lockdowns across the world.

PEA estimates 'robust' economics for Deep-South's Namibia copper project

TSX-listed Deep-South Resources reports that, using a heap leach treatment operation, its openpit Haib copper project, in Namibia, demonstrates robust economics. An updated preliminary economic assessment (PEA), conducted by METS Engineering Group, considered an indicated mineral resource of 456.9-million tonnes and a grade of 0.31% copper.

Danakali nears completion of Colluli's EPCM Phase 2

ASX- and LSE-listed potash company Danakali says its Eritrea-based Colluli potash project’s engineering procurement and construction management (EPCM) Phase 2 is nearing completion. The front-end engineering design (FEED) and schedule of the Colluli project is now in its final stage, on budget and scheduled for completion by June.

Cacophony of voices on LME floor may not be heard for many months

The London Metal Exchange's open outcry trading floor may remain closed for many more months as it cannot be reopened under COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, the head of the exchange said. LME CEO Matthew Chamberlain also told Reuters the exchange would look at potential M&A activity, but nothing was on the agenda currently. Antofagasta’s Luksic continues to believe in copper

Despite the price volatility of the past few years and the company’s growth projects grinding to a halt, London-listed miner Antofagasta chairperson Jean-Paul Luksic says the long-term fundamentals of copper and future demand outlook remain strong. The miner has suspended its Los Pelambres expansion and other growth projects, in Chile, amid the coronavirus health crisis. Nickel Mines raises first A$179m

ASX-listed Nickel Mines has completed the institutional component of its entitlement offer, raising an initial A$179-million. The company earlier this week flagged a A$231-million equity raise to fund the purchase of an additional 20% interest in the Hengjaya and Ranger Nickel rotary kiln electric furnace (RKEF) plants, in Indonesia.

Qld launches inquiry into methane explosions

The Queensland government has announced a mine safety board of inquiry to investigate more than 40 methane gas incidents in Queensland’s underground coal mines since mid-2019. The inquiry follows the underground gas explosion at major Anglo American’s Grosvenor coal mine near Moranbah, which put five miners in hospital.

Miners welcome low emissions technology paper

The federal government on Thursday released the Technology Investment Roadmap discussion paper, which is aimed at bringing a strategic and system-wide view to future investments in low emissions technologies. Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor said that investment in low emissions technologies that strengthen the Australian economy and supported jobs and businesses were a priority of the government on the road to recovery from Covid-19, and to help Australia reduce global emissions.
