China signals coal reliance to continue with three new mines

China’s top planning agency approved three different billion-dollar coal mine projects on Monday as the country continues to support the fuel that much of the rest of the world is shunning. The National Development and Reform Commission gave the go ahead to two mines in the northwestern province of Shaanxi and another in Inner Mongolia. The three projects will require a total investment of 24.1-billion yuan ($3.8-billion) and produce 19-million tons of coal a year.

London nickel hits highest in over a decade as supply tightens

London nickel prices rose on Monday to their highest in more than a decade, boosted by low inventories, while investors were cautious over the Ukraine tensions. US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed in principle to a summit over Ukraine, the French leader said, offering a possible path out of one of the most dangerous European crises in decades.

Anglo restarts Grosvenor operations

Diversified miner Anglo American has safely restarted its Grosvenor coal mine, in Queensland, following a gas incident in May 2020. The company on Monday told shareholders that it had received confirmation from the regulator, Resources Safety and Health Queensland, on February 16 that longwall mining operations could now recommence following incident.

Sandstorm converts Hod Maden stake into gold stream and launches Horizon Copper

NYSE- and TSX-listed Sandstorm Gold Royalties on Friday that it would reposition the company as a pure-play streamlining and royalty company with the disposal of its 30% interest in the Hod Maden copper/gold project, in Turkey. The company would sell its interest in the project to TSX-V-listed Royalty North Partners (RNP) in a reverse takeover transaction, which would result in the launch of a mining company, Horizon Copper.

Higher copper prices drive Oz Minerals profit

Copper/gold miner Oz Minerals has reported a 150% increase in aftertax net profit for the year ended December, on the back of higher copper prices and increased production. Net profit for the 2021 financial year increased to A$530,7-million, up from A$212.6-million reported in the 2020 financial year, while net revenue increased from A$1.3-billion to A$2-billion in the same period. Supreme Court orders Mexico officials to declare Almaden’s titles ineffective

The Mexican Supreme Court has ordered the Economy Ministry to declare Vancouver-headquartered explorer and developer Almaden’s mineral titles ineffective and to re-issue them once it has complied with an obligation to carry out consultations with indigenous communities. Almaden’s mineral claims are the basis of a lawsuit against the Mexican government asserting that the country’s mining law is unconstitutional.

Star Diamond and Rio Tinto set meeting date for JV project

Canadian junior Star Diamond and Rio Tinto Exploration Canada (RTEC) are set to meet on March 4 to review data collected from last two field seasons and to approve and interim expenditures budget for their Fort a la Corne (FalCon) joint venture (JV) project. IGO confirms CSA talks with Glencore

Metals miner Independence Group (IGO) on Monday confirmed that it was in ‘exclusive discussions’ with diversified miner Glencore in relation to its CSA copper operations, in New South Wales. Glencore last year announced that it was considering proposals and could enter into a sales process for the asset.

Develop's capital raise firmly supported

ASX-listed Develop has received firm commitments to raise an initial A$37.2-million in a placement and institutional entitlement offer, as part of a larger A$50-million capital raise to fund the A$100-million acquisition of the Woodlawn copper project, in New South Wales. Develop will raise an initial A$25-million through the placement of some 7.6-million shares, while the institutional entitlement offer will comprise some 3.7-million shares, to raise a further A$12.2-million.

Uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) has appointed Brad Welsh as MD and CEO, effective from February 18. Welsh in October assumed the role of acting CEO, after being seconded from parent company Rio Tinto.

Second round of Future Fuels Fund opens

The federal government has opened the second round of its newly expanded A$250-million Future Fuels Fund to support uptake of low and zero emissions vehicles in commercial fleets. Businesses will be able to apply for grants under the second round of the Future Fuels Fund to support the uptake of low and zero emissions vehicles over the next four years.
