Southern Copper says it is close to sealing deal for Cuajone mine restart in Peru

Southern Copper Corp said on Saturday that it was close to finalizing a deal with a group of communities to lift a protest that had led its Cuajone mine to suspend operations, pending the ratification of the agreement by local community assemblies. The Cuajone copper mine suspended operations on Febuary 28, after four communities in southern Peru shut down water access to the company and also blockaded a rail road used to transport the mineral.

Barrick reaches restart agreement at Reko Diq

NYSE and TSX-listed Barrick Gold has flagged the possible restart of its Reko Diq copper/gold project, in Pakistan, after reaching a framework agreement with the Pakistan and Balochistan governments. Operations at Reko Diq were suspended in 2011 due to a dispute over the legality of its licensing process, and the project is estimated to host one of the world’s largest undeveloped open pit copper-gold porphyry deposits.

Aus uses coal/alumina to aid the Ukraine

Australia over the weekend took the decision to ban alumina and aluminium ore exports, including bauxite, into Russia, as part of sanctions against the nation following its invasion of the Ukraine. Trade Minister Dan Tehan said the ban on Australian aluminium ores and alumina would limit Russia’s capaclty to produce aluminium, which is a critical export for the European nation.
