Glencore subsidiary pleads guilty in Britain to bribery

A subsidiary of commodity trading giant Glencore on Tuesday formally pleaded guilty in a London court to seven counts of bribery in connection with oil operations in Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Sudan. The UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) said sentencing had been set for early November.

Investment programme aims to empower regional value chains in mining

The Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has appointed globally active engineering services and consulting company DMT Group to lead the delivery of an investment programme that will empower regional value chains in copper, battery storage and mining inputs. The SADC ‘Regional Study and Project Viability Scan’ will identify investment opportunities for building local content capacity in what are noted as three critical areas for economic activity and value addition in Southern Africa.

Raubex makes buyout offer for remaining Bauba shares, Bauba to delist from JSE

Diversified mining and exploration company Bauba and JSE-listed Raubex have resolved to propose a transaction in terms of which Raubex will make a general offer to acquire all of the ordinary shares in the issued share capital of Bauba it does not already own for a cash consideration of 42c apiece. Raubex beneficially owns or controls 61.68% of Bauba's issued share capital.

Yellen urges less dependence on other nations for key supplies

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the US should work on shifting dependence on some nations for supplies of critical inputs as global supply-chain logjams have hurt the domestic economy. “We saw during the pandemic that our supply chains were very brittle and really lacking in resilience,” she said Monday. Yellen repeated her support for so-called friend-shoring, where supply chains are made up of “countries that espouse a common set of values.”

Fireweed Zinc mobilises field crews for Macmillan Pass drilling

The first field crews have been mobilised to the Macmillan Pass property, in Yukon, to prepare for the 2022 drill programme – set to be Fireweed Zinc’s largest to date with 8 000 m of diamond drilling planned. The TSX-V-listed explorer reports that significant improvements are being made to the camp to support the four-rig 2022 programme. Diamond drilling, core scanning and a muon tomography survey will begin in the coming weeks after the access road opens.

Fission signs Indigenous community agreement

Kelowna-based Fission Uranium has entered into an engagement and capacity agreement with the Ya'thi Néné Lands and Resources Office (YNLR), which represents the Athabasca Nations and Communities of the Nuhenéné. Fission’s Patterson Lake South (PLS) project in the Athabasca basin is within the Athabasca Denesųłiné territory and is currently advancing through the feasibility study and environmental assessment phase.

Qld puts aside A$80m for resources sector

Some A$80-million has been set aside in the Queensland Budget to support growth and diversification in the resources sector. Resources Minister Scott Stewart said the A$79.6-million department budget would help grow and diversify the resources industry into the future with a focus on good solid jobs and projects in Queensland’s emerging new economy minerals sector.

Eighth and last missing miner found dead in flooded Burkina Faso mine

The body of the last of eight miners who drowned in a Burkina Faso zinc mine owned by Trevali Mining Corp when it flooded on April 16 was found on Monday, the government said. The seven other bodies have been recovered gradually from the mine's underground passages since May 24, when the first four were discovered.

Qld hikes coal royalties

The Queensland government on Tuesday introduced new royalty rates for coal miners, bringing to an end a ten-year royalty freeze. “Multinational coal companies have enjoyed an extraordinary period of stability in Queensland’s coal royalty regime, thanks to the government’s extended freeze on coal royalties,” Treasurer Cameron Dick said while announcing the state Budget.

BHP, Vale reject Brazil steelmaker CSN's interest, say miner Samarco is not for sale

Miners Vale and BHP said in a joint statement on Monday they are not interested in selling their joint venture Samarco, after reports of the interest of Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN). "BHP Brasil and Vale say Samarco is not for sale and reaffirm its support for the restructuring plan filed by the employees' unions," the companies said in a joint statement.

Codelco workers in Chile to start national strike on Wednesday - union

Workers at Chile's state-owned Codelco announced on Monday they will start a nationwide strike early Wednesday in protest of the government and company's decision to close a troubled smelter, the president of the union federation told Reuters. "We are going to start on Wednesday in the first shift," said Amador Pantoja, president of the Federation of Copper Workers (FTC).

Canyon's Cameroon project proves up

A bankable feasibility study (BFS) into the Minim Martap bauxite project, in Cameroon, has confirmed an initial 20 year mine life, with the project expected to produce 6.4-million tonnes of high-grade bauxite a year. ASX-listed Canyon Resources on Tuesday told shareholders that the BFS was based on an updated proven ore reserve of 108.91-million tonnes, grading 51.1% total alumina and 2% total silica, as well as a total mineral resource estimate of over 1-billion tonnes, at 45.3% total alumina and... Bowen secures A$190m financing for Burton buy

Coal miner Bowen Coking Coal has secured A$190-million in funding to fast-track the acquisitions of the Burton and Lenton projects, in Queensland. Bowen Coking Coal at the end of December last year announced a binding sale and purchase agreement with fellow-listed coal miner New Hope Corporation to acquire New Lenton Coal, following a binding term sheet in August.
