Gold gains on safe-haven inflows, set for best week since March

Gold jumped more than 2% and was set for its best week in seven months on Friday, as conflict in the Middle East lifted safe-haven demand for the metal, combined with expectations that the U.S. interest rates may have peaked. Spot gold rose 2.1% to $1 907.30 per ounce by 9:22 a.m. ET (1322 GMT). US gold futures added 2% to $1 921.20. Prices were up 4.1% for the week.

BYD looks to buy lithium assets in Brazil

BYD is mulling the purchase of lithium mining assets in Brazil as it seeks to lock in raw-material supplies to expand its electric car production outside Asia. The Chinese company’s new EV factory in Brazil will include a unit to process lithium and iron phosphate for the international market and BYD hopes it will be able to finish work in less than two years, according to Stella Li, BYD’s global vice-president.

Lithium heavyweight Chile woos Japan to develop local industry

Chile, home to the world’s largest lithium reserves, says Japanese battery and metals companies are among Asian investors interested in acquiring long-term preferential access to the ingredient, in exchange for adding value to the raw material and transferring skills. Rio Tinto becomes official aluminium partner of the Montreal Canadiens

The Bell Centre, home of the Montreal Canadiens, is set to introduce infinitely recyclable cups made from aluminium produced in the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean region, in Québec, for use at sporting and entertainment events thanks to a new partnership between Rio Tinto and the Montreal Canadiens. Research identifies ways to reduce lithium in lithium batteries

Researchers at Monash University have developed a new lithium-sulphur battery design that reduces the amount of lithium required in a single battery. BHP averts strike at world's largest copper mine

Global miner BHP reached a preliminary deal with the supervisors' union at its Escondida mine in Chile, avoiding a strike at the world's largest copper deposit, the company announced late on Wednesday. In late September, the union's members rejected a proposal from the company, prompting government mediation to avoid a work stoppage.
