Iron-ore soars to nine-month high on China stimulus anticipation

Iron-ore surged to its highest intraday price since February, with demand optimism growing as more details emerge about China’s latest economic stimulus drive. The steel-making staple rose as much as 2.3% in Singapore, after gaining 2% on Monday. It was boosted by a front-page editorial in state-owned media Tuesday that said funds from the one-trillion yuan ($140-billion) debt issuance announced by Beijing last month should be disbursed into construction projects and allocated in a timely manner.

Codelco to invest $720m in Chuquicamata copper mine

Chile's State-owned Codelco, the world's leading copper miner, is planning to invest an extra $720-million in the revamp of one of its copper mines. The company has proposed a series of modifications to the original Chuquicamata underground project, aiming to reach the authorized production rate of 140 000 metric tons per day.

World Coal Association rebrands as FutureCoal

After 38 years, the World Coal Association (WCA) has rebranded itself as FutureCoal – The Global Alliance for Sustainable Coal. FutureCoal CE Michelle Manook says the rebrand was done in response to a call from coal and coal allied sectors to modernise and unite under a common purpose.

MMG to acquire Botswana copper/silver mine

Melbourne-headquartered resources company MMG has entered into an agreement to acquire Khoemacau Copper Mining, which owns and operates the Khoemacau copper and silver mine, in Botswana. MMG chairperson Jiqing Xu says the addition of the mine to MMG’s international portfolio delivers on the company's growth strategy and vision to build a global diversified minerals and metals company.
