Trafigura M&A head is latest top executive to retire from trader

Trafigura Group head of mergers and acquisitions Jesus Fernandez is leaving, in the latest senior departure from the commodity trading giant. Fernandez will retire after around 20 years at the firm, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because the information is not yet public. He will be succeeded by Patrick Burke, another longtime Trafigura dealmaker.

Southern Copper eyes start of stalled Peru mine project as soon as this year

Southern Copper hopes to begin construction as soon as this year at a once fiercely contested copper mine in Peru’s coastal mountains as socio-political tensions ease and authorities get behind the project. The company has had permits to build its Tia Maria project for years yet held back because of environmental opposition. A 2019 decision to approve its license unleashed weeks of protests and then-President Pedro Castillo called the mine a non-starter. The current government says it’s supportive.

Alpha HPA upsizes equity raising to A$175m

ASX-listed Alpha HPA on Tuesday upsized its equity raising to facilitate the development of its high-purity alumina (HPA) refinery in Gladstone, Queensland, to A$175-million. The company previously planned a A$120-million equity raising as part of a broader funding package for the Stage 2 project.

Dubai mining firm plans to start Argentina lithium production next year

Dubai-based United Mining Projects Corporation (UMPC) plans to begin producing battery-grade lithium in Argentina next year, aiming to deliver 5 000 metric tons in 2027 and double that in 2028, CEO Bradley Pielsticker said in an interview. Argentina is the world's fourth-largest lithium producer, with a pipeline of projects led by international companies set to ramp up in the coming months.

Rio Tinto declares force majeure on Australian alumina cargoes

Rio Tinto Group has declared force majeure on alumina cargoes from its refineries in Queensland, Australia, due to shortages of gas to power its operations, according to people familiar with the matter. The company notified clients on Monday, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private information. Rio produces alumina — the raw material for making aluminum — at its Yarwun refinery and at Queensland Alumina, a joint-venture it owns with Russia’s United Co. Rusal International.
