Africa delivers ‘usual reliable performance’ with steady output, lower costs – Barrick

The Africa region delivered its “usual reliable performance” with steady production and well contained costs, Barrick CEO Dr Mark Bristow reported this week when it maintained its quarterly dividend declaration amid continuous management focus on value creation and growth. The half-year results of the New York- and Toronto-listed company showed “another steady quarter" for Loulo-Gounkoto, with cash costs well contained. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.)

Strike action at Lundin’s Caserones mine

TSX-listed Lundin Mining has announced that one of the three unions representing about 30% of the workforce at the Caserones mine, in Chile, has initiated strike action. This follows a period of negotiation in which Caserones attempted to reach a new collective bargaining agreement with the unionised employees.

Chile-focused DLE lithium developer heads for Australian market

Aim-listed lithium exploration and development company CleanTech Lithium (CTL), headed by mining veteran Steve Kesler, has announced its planned dual-listing on the ASX next month, along with an intended capital raise of A$20-million. The company believes the ASX is a “natural fit”, considering that its current shareholder base features Australian shareholders, including Regal Funds Management at about 15%.

Iron-ore takes fresh hit as concerns over global glut exact toll

Iron-ore slumped — following its fourth weekly loss in five — on concerns that a slowdown in steelmaking at Chinese mills, combined with record shipments from Australia and Brazil, would lead to a glut. Futures dropped below $99 a ton in Singapore after shedding almost 3% last week. Chinese steel demand has been hurt this year as economic growth has slowed and the property crisis drags on. Barrick open to being partner in Cobre Panama mine, CEO says

Barrick Gold stands ready to be a partner in the Cobre Panama copper mine once the Panamanian government decides on the disputed asset's future, Mark Bristow, CEO of the Canadian gold and copper mining company, said on Monday. The mine, owned by First Quantum Minerals, has been under dispute since November when protests led to the mine's closure.

Union at BHP's Escondida mine says company made 'illegal' offer amid negotiations

The union representing workers at BHP's Escondida mine in Chile told its members on Monday that it would accuse the company of "anti-union practices" for making a contract offer outside of a government-mandated mediation process. The company and the powerful workers' union have been in a five-day period of government mediation, due to expire at midnight on Monday, aimed at preventing a strike after workers overwhelmingly rejected a previous contract offer from BHP during a formal negotiation period.
