BHP is cynically trying to avoid its responsibility for Brazil's worst environmental disaster, lawyers representing thousands of victims told London's High Court on Monday, as a lawsuit worth up to £36-billion ($47-billion) began. More than 600 000 Brazilians, 46 local governments and around 2 000 businesses are suing BHP over the 2015 collapse of the Mariana dam in southeastern Brazil, which was owned and operated by BHP and Vale's Samarco joint venture.

Construction of the multi-million-ounce Valentine gold mine, in Newfoundland and Labrador, is progressing well, reaching nearly 81% completion by the end of last month, TSX-listed Calibre Mining president and CEO Darren Hall reported on Friday. However, he also said that cost pressures had emerged, mainly owing to contractor performance that resulted in increased manpower and associated costs.

China will account for less than half of global steel consumption in 2024 for the first time in six years, according to the World Steel Association, as the decline in the country’s real estate sector pummels demand for the metal. Miners Vale and BHP are a step closer to finalising a deal with Brazilian authorities to provide a multibillion-dollar settlement for one of the country’s worst mining disasters. Ongoing negotiations that also involve Vale-BHP’s iron-ore joint venture, Samarco, point to a total deal valued at about 170-billion reais ($30-billion) as settlement for the 2015 disaster, Vale said Friday in a filing.
