Hydrogen option highlighted as Middle East crisis disrupts fossil-fuel economics

South Africa’s Presidency has been advised to reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels as current events may alter the economics of alternative fuel sources such as green hydrogen and green ammonia, for the production of which South Africa enjoys competitive advantages, Business Day reported on Monday, April 13. Forming part of a summary of priority decisions is that there must be less reliance placed on imported fuels and great emphasis placed on energy independence.

Silverco confirms low-cost, rapid payback viable at revamped Cusi mine

TSX-V-listed Silverco Mining has confirmed in a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) of the Cusi mine, in Mexico, that a low-capital restart and production of 2.5-million ounces of silver equivalent are possible. The mine has an after-tax net present value (NPV) of $104-million and internal rate of return (IRR) of 94% with payback within nine months at base case silver prices of $44.58/oz.

Vale builds tailings reprocessing plant at defunct Gongo Soco mine

Brazil-headquartered iron-ore and nickel producer Vale is reinforcing the Minas Gerais region as a hub for iron-ore production from circular sources, having advanced a circular mining programme at the suspended Gongo Soco mine. The company is implementing a project to reprocess tailings from the mine’s decommissioned Sul Superior dam, which was determined to have elevated safety risk levels in 2019.

Selkirk increases private placement to raise $30m

After announcing a private placement to raise C$20-million, TSX-V-listed Selkirk Copper Mines has increased the size of the placement to raise gross proceeds of C$41-million, or $30-million, owing to strong investor demand. The proceeds will be used to advance development of the Minto mine, in Canada’s Yukon territory, as well as for working capital and general corporate purposes.

Asian LNG imports plummet to six-year low on Middle East crisis

Asian liquefied natural gas imports have dropped to the lowest in almost six years as the conflict in the Middle East chokes supplies and forces buyers to curb consumption. The 30-day moving average of net shipments to the region fell below 600,000 tons over the weekend, the least since June 2020, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. That was when the Covid pandemic slashed gas demand across Asia.

Peru orders new review of Southern Copper's stalled Tia Maria project, cancels okay

Peru's government has revoked its authorization for Southern Copper's Tia Maria copper project and sent it back to authorities for review, the mining ministry said on Friday, creating a new obstacle for the long-stalled project. Tia Maria, one of the biggest mines under development in Peru, the world's third-largest copper producer, has a target start date of late 2027 following more than a decade of opposition from local farmers and residents who fear pollution and water contamination.
