BREAKING – USS Bohomme Richard on fire after explosion at the San Diego Naval base
The fire in the Bonhomme Richard was started in the Deep V lower Cargo Hold where equipment and vehicles are stored. There was an explosion, but officials are not sure what triggered it.
SDFD is assisting on this fire on board the USS Bonhomme Richard. We are in unified command (partnered) with Federal Fire.
The fire was called away at approx. 8:30 AM, July 12. Approx. 160 Sailors were aboard at the time. @LHD6BHR is going through a maintenance availability and has a crew size of approx. 1000. 18 Sailors have been transferred to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries according to the Navy. Most are being treated for smoke inhalation.
Seventeen Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital. All inport ships have been contacted and directed to provide fire parties to possibly assist with firefighting efforts.
SDFD personnel were instructed to exit the pier.
