Hands-On with the Delightfully Different Rado True Square Automatic Open Heart Diamonds Limited Edition

When discussing watches, Rado is a universe of its own. This pioneer in ceramic timepieces never bothered much with looking at what other brands were doing, steadily walking to their own beat. This is to the great fortune of us all, as it has always resulted in unique watches, but even many of those don’t come close to what Rado has in store for us with the True Square Automatic Open Heart Diamonds Limited Edition.

For this watch, Rado made a blend of black and white ceramic (the watch also exists in an opposite configuration) for the bracelet. For those who have experience with a bracelet made from ceramic, they know that it is one of the most comfortable materials to wear. It is soft to the touch, heats up to body temperature in a matter of seconds, and is very light. Due to its strength, it is also very scratch-resistant, but the catch is that making it requires significant skill and experience, as well as a dedicated production facility, all of which Rado has.

The True Square Automatic Open Heart Diamonds Limited Edition could have been a more ordinary watch if Rado had fitted it with a regular black or white dial. Fortunately, they didn’t, opting instead to divide it into four sectors in either black or white. The hours are marked with either black or colorless brilliant-cut diamonds, which look surprisingly subtle in comparison to the rest of the design. To make matters even more intriguing, Rado skeletonized the dial and planned the cutouts in such a way that they either highlighted key elements of the mechanical movement below or the different finishing styles.

This results in a watch that is unlike any other. While it can sometimes be hard to distinguish the hands between all this visual splendor, you are more than willing to forgive that, as this Rado is not a watch but an experience. It is powered by Rado caliber R734, which is another name for the competent ETA C07.111 Powermatic, which beats at a modest 21,600 VpH and offers 80 hours of power reserve. It can be admired for both sights and delights with pleasing decorations, such as Geneva stripes and perlage.

Rado markets the True Square Automatic Open Heart Diamonds Limited Edition more towards ladies, but with a diameter of 38mm, it can actually go both ways just as easily. It is a very well-made watch that perfectly showcases not only Rado’s expertise but also its unique way of looking at the world of watches. Of each color configuration, Rado will make 888 pieces, priced at $3,150
