Premier League 2023/24 season officially the most entertaining in history after Liverpool star Quansah’s record goal

THIS season’s Premier League has officially gone down as the most entertaining in history.

That’s after Jarell Quansah scored the 1,223rd goal of the season in the 40th minute of Jurgen Klopp’s final game as Liverpool manager.

That means a record has been set for the most ever goals scored in a Premier League campaign.

It overtakes the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93 for volume of goals and means games this season have averaged 3.27 goals per match.

That record comes despite 22 teams being involved in the Premier League in its first two seasons.

That number was then reduced to the 20 we have today in 1994.

This was to accommodate four English teams being eligible for the Champions League and was a UEFA directive.

The record for most goals scored in a 20 team league season was already broken last month.

There’s a range of factors that have seen the volume of goals in the Prem increase this season.

One of them has been the relative weakness of the relegated sides, Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton Town.

The Blades conceded 104 goals, with Burnley conceding 78 and Luton conceding 85.

Another factor is the increase in minutes played this season.

As part of a ref directive at the start of the season, longer added times were common early on this campaign.

And while the days of double figure numbers for added time have since become less common, the days of two minutes of added time at the end of a game look to be over.
