The 27-year-old branded the incident before tee off in Louisville, Kentucky, “a big misunderstanding” after “a very chaotic situation”.

Scheffler’s mugshot, which shows him wearing an orange jumpsuit, sent social media into a frenzy after he was detained at Valhalla Golf Club.

He returned to the course less than an hour before his fog-delayed tee time and finished his round joint eighth at 13-under par.

He said on Sunday: “I got arrested Friday morning and I showed up here and played a good round of golf, as well.”

The Texan was due in a Louisville courtroom at 9am on Tuesday but that appearance has been rescheduled for Monday, June 3.

Steve Romines, the golfer’s attorney, filed a motion to delay proceedings having earlier said his client would not attend the pre-trial hearing.

Scheffler is expected to be at the June 3 hearing, according to WLKY.com

It is thought the golfer was trying to avoid a fatal traffic jam early on Friday while on his way to the second round of the PGA Championship when he allegedly hit a police officer.

His attorney Mr Romine said: “They were directing traffic, he held his media credential out and was going in like they’ve been instructed.

“And yeah, I think the officer that was directing traffic was maybe not part of the event’s traffic detail.

“And so that’s where the miscommunication arose and that’s why we’re here.”

Video of Scheffler’s arrest went viral before he was charged with second-degree assault of a cop and third-degree criminal mischief.

He’s also charged with reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Following the incident, the golfer wrote on Instagram: “There was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.”
