Diversity of Chagas disease diagnostic antigens: Successes and limitations

by Tapan Bhattacharyya, Niamh Murphy, Michael A. Miles

Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a public health issue in endemic regions of the Americas, and is becoming globalised due to migration. In the chronic phase, 2 accordant serological tests are required for diagnosis. In addition to “in-house” assays, commercial tests are available (principally ELISA and rapid diagnostic tests). Herein, we discuss the discovery era of defined T. cruzi serological... Читать дальше...

Why aphid virus retention needs more attention: Modelling aphid behaviour and virus manipulation in non-persistent plant virus transmission

by Elin K. Falla, Nik J. Cunniffe

Plant viruses threaten food security and are often transmitted by insect vectors. Non-persistently transmitted (NPT) plant viruses are transmitted almost exclusively by aphids. Because virions attach to the aphid’s stylet (mouthparts) and are acquired and inoculated via brief epidermal probes, the aphid–virus interaction is highly transient, with a very short aphid virus retention time. Many NPT viruses manipulate their host plant’s phenotype to change aphid behaviour to optimise virus transmission. Читать дальше...

Experience-dependent serotonergic signaling in glia regulates targeted synapse elimination

by Vanessa Kay Miller, Kendal Broadie

The optimization of brain circuit connectivity based on initial environmental input occurs during critical periods characterized by sensory experience-dependent, temporally restricted, and transiently reversible synapse elimination. This precise, targeted synaptic pruning mechanism is mediated by glial phagocytosis. Serotonin signaling has prominent, foundational roles in the brain, but functions in glia, or in experience-dependent brain circuit synaptic connectivity remodeling... Читать дальше...

Warren Buffett, Dave Ramsey, and John Maynard Keynes are Wrong!

The so-called great minds in economics and finance claim that gold is a “barbarous relic” or a “shiny,” worthless rock. Gold is neither. Despite the steady attacks on its integrity, gold remains a good place to put one's money.

New iPhones charge faster but nowhere near 45W

Macworld

When the iPhone 16 handsets were unveiled last month, there weren’t many surprises. Most of the upgrades had been leaked long before, or accurately guessed by well-informed analysts. But not everything we heard before the event proved to be correct.

One theory, supported by seemingly robust evidence, was that the new phones would bring a substantial increase in wired charging speed, all the way up to 45W if the power brick and other accessories supported it. (The... Читать дальше...

What Jacoby Brissett Finds ‘Disrespectful’ From Patriots Fans

The New England Patriots backed Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback after their ugly loss last Sunday and a segment of fans agreed with that decision but for different reasons. Despite Brissett’s poor play, head coach Jerod Mayo dismissed the idea of replacing the veteran with rookie Drake Maye. There’s a logical rationale for the […]
