Can nonpartisan primaries boost turnout and lessen demographic disparities?

by Todd Donovan, Nathan K. Micatka, Caroline J. Tolbert

U.S. congressional general elections are largely uncompetitive, featuring candidates who emerge from low-turnout primaries. Voters in these primaries are unrepresentative of the broader electorate; primary voters tend to be older and wealthier. Previous research has focused on how open and nonpartisan primaries may affect the turnout of unaffiliated voters in primaries. We are interested in the downstream effects of opening primaries... Load-bearing mechanism and engineering application of a heavy-duty transfer steel platform supported by basement columns

by Meijun Shang, Xuemei Li

Heavy lifting operations performed on basement roof slabs often impose concentrated loads that may cause local stress concentrations, cracking, or even structural failure. To address this issue, this study proposes a heavy-load transfer steel platform supported by basement columns, which effectively isolates the lifting load from the roof slab to ensure structural safety. The load-bearing mechanism of the proposed steel platform was analyzed theoretically, and finite... Читать дальше...

U.S. politics as a reminder of historical losses in American Indian Adults: Implications for political participation

by Zachary J. Wood, Peter J. Helm, Neha A. John-Henderson

Historical loss (HL) is a contributor to experiences of historical trauma and its negative impacts on American Indians. The relationship between HL, U.S. politics and political participation among American Indians has not been examined. Minority groups can become politically active through perceiving discrimination or injustices against them. Measures of HL contain items related to the discrimination and injustices that American Indians have experienced. Читать дальше...

Forecasting China’s shipping indices based on modal decomposition and optimized deep learning integrated model

by Yuye Zou, Yingyu Liu, Guangnian Xiao

This study proposes an innovative hybrid forecasting model, VMD-CPSO-BiLSTM, which significantly enhances the prediction accuracy of shipping indices in China’s maritime sector. The model employs a sophisticated three-phase methodology: (1) decomposition through Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) to extract multiple intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) from the original time series, effectively capturing its nonlinear and complex patterns; (2) optimization... Lactate dehydrogenase is an indicator for outcomes of short-term and long-term in septic patients

by Zhao Zeng, Cuirong Guo, Fengning Tang, Ning Ding

Objective

The association between lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and clinical outcomes in sepsis was explored based on MIMIC-IV database.

Methods

This was a retrospective study. Models including unadjusted model and adjusted models were performed for exploring the association of LDH with 30-day mortality and 1-year mortality. The smooth fitting curves were constructed by using generalized additive model. The predictive value of LDH for clinical outcomes in sepsis was evaluated. Читать дальше...

Childhood abuse and adult cyberbullying victimization in Canada: The role of community belonging

by Emily Earle, David Speed

Childhood abuse is linked to a higher risk of experiencing cyberbullying victimization in adolescence and young adulthood, while a sense of belonging is associated with a reduced risk and buffers against the mental health effects of childhood trauma. However, there is a lack of Canadian research, particularly studies involving adult samples, examining the connection between childhood abuse and cyberbullying victimization in adulthood. The current study examined... Читать дальше...

STF-DKANMixer: Tri-component decomposition with KAN-MLP hybrid architecture for time series forecasting

by Junxiang Wei, Rongzuo Guo, Yuning Wang

Long-term time series forecasting is critical for domains such as traffic and energy systems, yet contemporary models often fail to capture complex multiscale patterns and nonlinear dynamics, resulting in significant inaccuracies during periods of abrupt change. To overcome these limitations, we introduce STF-DKANMixer, a novel hybrid architecture combining a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) with the expressive power of the Kolmogorov–Arnold Network (KAN).
