Tokayev holds phone call with president of Uzbekistan

Tengrinews.kz – Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a telephone conversation with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, citing Akorda’s press service.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev congratulated Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the successful holding of the first elections of Kurultai deputies.

The President of Kazakhstan thanked Shavkat Mirziyoyev for his support and for sending a mission of observers from Uzbekistan, including as part of international organizations.

The Head of State informed the Uzbek leader about the domestic political reforms being carried out in the country. As Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted, the Kurultai is an important part of ongoing political reforms aimed at building a progressive, modern and just Kazakhstan.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the development of Kazakh-Uzbek relations, which continue to strengthen in the spirit of friendship and strategic partnership.

During the conversation, special attention was paid to further expanding trade and economic ties, implementing joint investment projects in transport and logistics, industrial cooperation, and stepping up contacts between the business communities of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

The presidents also exchanged views on current issues on the regional and international agenda.

August 23 — election day

On July 1, 2026, the country’s new Constitution, adopted in a national referendum on March 15, came into force. After that, the Mazhilis and Senate ceased their work, and their deputies were dissolved.

The new Constitution provides for a unicameral Parliament — the Kurultai. It will consist of 145 deputies elected for five years.

On August 23, Kazakhstan held elections of Kurultai deputies.

Earlier, the Central Election Commission announced the preliminary voting results in Kazakhstan’s Kurultai deputy elections.

To enter the Kurultai, parties had to receive at least 5 percent of the total vote.

According to CEC Chairman Nurlan Abdirov, the total number of registered voters was 12,623,289. A total of 9,351,539 people took part in the elections, or 73.8 percent of citizens included on the voter lists.
