Plate collisions still allowed

Buster Posey supposedly hates it when people refer to the catcher-interference rule as the “Posey Rule,” but because it was instituted in 2014 as a result of his 2011 injury from a home-plate collision, he’ll just have to suck it up.

[...] Monday night at Wrigley Field we saw a good old-fashioned collision between Anthony Rizzo and Padres catcher Austin Hedges during the sixth inning of the Cubs’ 3-2 victory.

With one out and Rizzo on third, Padres center fielder Matt Szczur caught a Kris Bryant line drive and fired a nice throw to the plate.

Rizzo barreled into Hedges, who held onto the ball to complete the double play.

The play drew the ire of Padres manager Andy Green, who later called it a “cheap shot” and hinted Rizzo deserved a suspension.

“You don’t see it anymore because the runner thinks he has to avoid the catcher,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon.
