Spain moves to dismiss Catalonia’s secessionist government

THE hesitation is over. On October 21st Mariano Rajoy (pictured, left), Spain’s prime minister, announced that his government will ask the Senate to give it powers to dismiss the administration in Catalonia and to call a regional election there within six months. Whether this leads to a solution to the six-week stand-off over Catalan independence, or to an intensification of Spain’s constitutional crisis, depends on how much resistance the government will now face in one of the country’s most important regions. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A former Little Rock police officer has been ordered to pay more than $382,000 in attorney's fees and costs to the mother of a 15-year-old boy he fatally shot. Attorney Austin Porter Jr. told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Friday that Josh Hastings is to pay Sylvia Perkins, who is the mother of Bobby Moore III. GLENBURN, Maine (AP) — A Maine runner is hoping for a big finish for his unusual way of honoring the nation's fallen military personnel. Veteran Jacob Marquis, of Glenburn, plans to complete his goal of "one step for each sacrifice" during the Marine Corps marathon on Sunday. Marquis says he's aiming for more than 1 million steps. Based on his research, that equates to one step for every U.S. combat death since the Revolutionary War. He says he usually takes about 1,500 steps per mile, so that equates to close to 700 miles.
