49ers’ Chip Kelly Q&A: ‘I don’t know if I can be significantly different’

After his formal press conference was finished this morning, 49ers head coach Chip Kelly had an informal Q&A with reporters.

Here’s the transcript:

[...] you came out here last Thursday?

Got on a plane.

What were you thinking about after that first interview?

Trent kept in touch with me by phone, kept me abreast of the situation in terms of, they had other candidates to look at.

When you go into it, there’s going to be a group of guys.

To me, I felt like we struck it off the first time we had a chance to visit each other.

Without any clothes?

Let’s just not get a little weird here now.

Was this your only interview?

Have you hired a defensive coordinator?

[...] they actually sign the papers that they’ve taken the job…

Do you think this is a better cultural fit here than Philadelphia was?

[...] we didn’t win enough games my last year, it wasn’t a good situation.

Did you expect to get fired?

Do you expect to be a significantly different coach here than you were in Philly?

Is this team capable of a quick turnaround?

[...] for me to make a prediction on January 20th doesn’t benefit anybody.

[...] you don’t know?

Was that the first time you were fired?

Is there something you like about the NFL compared to college football?

I love the competition.

[...] I think it’s competition at the highest level.

Every week you have to come to play in this league.

Everything’s a wash, really, to be honest with you.

Seattle’s been to the last two Super Bowls.

Bruce has a legitimate chance with his team this year to go to it.

Jeff’s one of the coaches, I mean, he’s been in the league for such a long time.

If you’re a competitor, you get excited about competing in that.

On another note, there aren’t many divisions where you say, ‘hey, let me go play in that division because I think it’s easy.’

Because you go one year and team’s 12-4 and the next year they’re 4-12.

The Atlanta Falcons went to one play away from going to the Super Bowl, they lost in the NFC Championship game to the 49ers, I think it was, and the next year they were 4-12.

If you’re really good, you pick last.

If you’re not really good, you pick first.

Pretty straightforward.

How do you describe fearless?

Regarding your offensive coordinator position, what do you look for a an OC?

Right-hand man?

What are you looking for in defensive coordinator?

Everybody plays four down, everybody plays nickel, everybody’s going to get to an even package.
