After the formal news conference, general manager Trent Baalke spoke with reporters about Kaepernick, who has had surgeries on his non-throwing shoulder, thumb and knee since late November.

On Wednesday, the 49ers signed Eric Rogers, 24, who led the Canadian Football League with 1,448 receiving yards, tied for the league lead in receiving touchdowns (10) and was third in receptions (87) last season with the Calgary Stampeders.

Rogers’ $300,000 in guaranteed money is the most for a CFL player since Miami defensive end Cameron Wake received a $1 million signing bonus in 2009.

Kelly said he would retain Tom Rathman, whom Kelly termed the best running backs coach in the NFL, but did not announce any other staff hires.

The 49ers have offered their defensive-coordinator position to Houston linebackers coach Mike Vrabel, 40, and are awaiting his answer, ESPN reported.

The 49ers also have interviewed incumbent defensive coordinator Eric Mangini.

Baalke said running back Carlos Hyde underwent late-season foot surgery after he sustained a stress fracture in October.
