A’s Rich Hill unlikely to be ready to go Sunday

The possibilities are slim, especially with Tuesday night starter Dillon Overton being sent down Wednesday.

Overton can’t return for 10 days unless the A’s have someone go on the DL; the team could consider Hill for a DL spot, of course, but it’s unclear if he’d need 15 days to recover from a torn blister on his left middle finger and if he were put on the DL, he wouldn’t be eligible to return until Aug. 2.

With the A’s likely to trade Hill before the Aug. 1 deadline, a DL stint seems particularly unlikely - and Oakland would have to target another starter for that spot in the rotation, anyway.

Overton, with two decent starts and one rough one to his credit so far, might have the upper hand; Jesse Hahn and Zach Neal also would be considerations.

The A’s sent out Overton in order to make room for utility infielder Arismendy Alcantara; the club went without a backup middle infielder Tuesday.

[...] base coach Ron Washington took a gamble Tuesday sending Marcus Semien from second on Josh Reddick’s slow roller to deep short with two outs in the 10th inning.

Semien made it in when the throw from shortstop Carlos Correa was up the line.

The key was Marcus giving the effort he gave, and he kept running.

Washington was almost right up on the third-base bag when Correa was making the play and Correa looked Washington’s way initially, almost as if he thought Washington was the baserunner.

None of the Astros thought Washington’s positioning was an issue, and Washington often moves up toward the runner if he wants him to go hard.

Washington hangs back if he believes he might have to change his mind and throw up a late stop sign.
