Hunter Pence needs more rehab time

BOSTON — The exuberance over another quick return for right fielder Hunter Pence proved too optimistic.

Manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged Wednesday that Pence’s “minor setback” in his rehab from hamstring surgery will delay him about a week and cost him a chance to return on the next homestand.

Pence was still sore four days after tweaking his leg in his first rehab game for Triple-A Sacramento.

News on the other two injured regulars was better.

[...] baseman Joe Panik continued his rehab with Sacramento on Wednesday, playing seven innings and going 1-for-4 in a 10-4 win at New Orleans.

[...] baseman Matt Duffy is running better with less soreness in his left Achilles tendon, which forced the Giants to slow his recovery.

“It looks like he’s turned a corner, knock wood,” Bochy said.

Though the Giants are focusing on impact relievers, they also are open to deepening the roster with experienced infielders and outfielders.

The Giants will see right-handers in five of their next six games.

The Giants are not inclined to demote a reliever for Panik, but rather a position player.

Grant Green, Ramiro Peña and Conor Gillaspie are out of minor-league options, but outfielders Jarrett Parker and Mac Williamson are not.

Optioning either would leave the Giants with four outfielders plus Green, who can play there.
