Authorities say a man is in custody after he allegedly tossed a hoax bomb through a New York City police car window and held authorities at bay in an overnight standoff.

Police say the object turned out to include a harmless electrical component wrapped in cloth.

The situation began unfolding Wednesday night in Times Square when the object was tossed into the open window of a New York Police Department vehicle.

Authorities say police negotiators are trying to talk to a man barricaded inside a vehicle in Manhattan, where he's suspected of tossing a hoax bomb through the window of a police vehicle.

The New York Police Department bomb squad was called in after police say someone threw a suspicious object at a patrol car.

Officials say someone in another vehicle threw the object at the patrol car at a busy midtown Manhattan intersection around midnight Wednesday.
