5 rescued from flooded San Jose homeless camp

Five people were rescued from trees and other brush after the Coyote Creek flooded a homeless encampment at a San Jose golf course Tuesday, officials said.

The flood waters surged into the Los Lagos Golf Course between Tuers Road and Lone Bluff Way early Tuesday, washing out the nearby homeless encampment and trapping people in trees above the fast moving water.

“Water in the Coyote Creek watershed trapped multiple people,” said Capt. Mitch Matlow, with the San Jose Fire Department.

After a 2-hour operation, rescuers pulled five people from the water.

Heavy rains on Monday coupled with the additional water from the reservoir caused the creek to surge beyond its banks on Tuesday.
