Immunity can’t stop us: READ what EFCC has to say about freezing Fayose’s account

– The EFCC said it had the right to investigate any governor whose account is being used to move funds

– This was in reaction to the claim that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State cannot be investigated because of immunity

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said immunity does not stop the commission from investigating suspicious account belonging to any governor.

The anti-graft agency was reacting to the claim that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state cannot be investigated because of immunity currently being enjoyed by him.

The EFCC said it has the right investigate any governor whose account is being used to move funds and Fayose is not an exception

Speaking to Vanguard, Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman for the EFCC, said the immunity being enjoyed by any governor does not prevent the commission from investigating suspicious movements of money into their accounts.

He said the commission has the right to investigate any governor whose account is being used to move funds.

“Immunity does not prevent EFCC from investigating suspicious accounts of those enjoying immunity and Fayose cannot be an exception,” Uwujaren said.

Sources at the anti-corruption agency disclosed that a personal account at the Zenith Bank of Nigeria belonging to Fayose, was frozen in connection with over N1.2billion he took in 2014 from the embattled National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki, to prosecute his re-election as governor.

Report earlier surfaced that the EFCC had frozen the personal account of Governor Fayose and some of his associates.

The Ekiti governor described the action as illegal, while citing section 308 of the 1999 constitution. He said the federal government should fight corruption within the ambit of the law, since he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Sunday, June 19, Fayose asked the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop harassing his government by threatening functionaries of the government with arrest and looking for how his election was funded.
