Italy government passes motorway decree, delays appointing commissioner

ROME (Reuters) - The Italian government approved a decree on Thursday aimed at speeding up the rebuilding of a collapsed motorway bridge in the northern city of Genoa that is a vital transport link for the whole country. However, in a sign of internal divisions within the coalition government, the cabinet did not name the person it wants to oversee the reconstruction effort, with a row simmering over which companies should take part in the huge project.

Attorney general vows to fight nationwide court injunctions

Lynch WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday vowed to fight back against federal courts that issue injunctions barring the federal government from implementing regulations nationwide, and accused federal judges of engaging in "judicial activism." In a speech in Missouri, Sessions revealed he was issuing new litigation guidance that he said would "assist our Department attorneys in fighting unconstitutional orders" all the way to the U.S.

(Reuters) - Volkswagen said on Thursday it would stop producing its Beetle compact car globally in 2019, ending a model that looked backward to the 1960s counter-culture as the automaker prepares for a leap towards a future of mass-market electric cars. Canada PM says he wants a good NAFTA deal soon, hazy on deadline

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday he wanted a good NAFTA deal as soon as possible, but did not answer directly when asked if he agreed with Washington that the end of September was the final deadline for talks. Vietnam court jails activist for 12 years

HANOI (Reuters) - A court in central Vietnam has jailed an activist accused of trying to overthrow the state to 12 years in prison, his lawyer said on Thursday, days after two rights campaigners were barred from attending a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Hanoi. Nguyen Trung Truc, 44, was also given five years of house arrest following his jail term at Wednesday's trial in Quang Binh province, his lawyer, Nguyen Van Mieng, said.
