Trafigura locks in Nyrstar with $650m rescue deal

By handing a $650-million lifeline to Nyrstar, Trafigura Group cemented its power over the troubled zinc producer and raised its standing in a possible restructuring. Trafigura granted extra cash to keep Nyrstar running smoothly as the company, the world’s second-largest zinc producer, faced a crisis over its massive debt burden. Analysts said the deal alleviates some of the short-term pressure on Nyrstar and makes a debt restructuring more likely in the future.

Doubts cast on plans for deluge of new nickel supply

Expectations of a supply avalanche hitting the nickel market next year due to new capacity in Indonesia have sent prices to seven-month lows, but analysts doubt the plans spearheaded by Chinese firms can be carried out so quickly. Benchmark nickel on the London Metal Exchange nearing $11 000/t is down more than 15% since late September, partly due to the US-China trade dispute undermining demand for the metal used in stainless steel.

Rambler widens Q3 loss despite much-improved output

Copper and gold producer Rambler Metals and Mining has widened its third-quarter net loss to $2.2-million, as higher production expenses offset an increase in revenue. Revenue rose from $7.3-million in the third quarter of 2017, to $9-million, while cash production expenses increased from $6.7-million, to $8.2-million.

Kore expects extensions to existing sylvinite deposits at Sintoukola

Kore Potash on Wednesday provided an update to its exploration targets for potential extensions of the Kola and Dougou Extension sylvinite deposits at its 97%-owned Sintoukola potash project in the Republic of Congo. These exploration targets have been identified as part of the work programme to improve the company’s understanding of both the potential scale and the strategic opportunities presented by the multiple occurrences of potash in the Sintoukola project area.

Zambia's copper output up 10.4% y/y in September

Zambia's annual copper output rose 10.4% in September to 631 359 tonnes, the central bank in Africa's second-biggest producer of the industrial metal said on Wednesday. Some mining companies operating in Zambia include NFC Africa, majority owned by China Non-ferrous Metals Company Limited (CNMC), Canada’s First Quantum Minerals, Glencore, Barrick Gold and Vedanta Resources.

Debswana appoints new MD as Bonyongo retires

Debswana Diamond Company, a subsidiary of De Beers Group, has appointed Albert Milton MD, effective December 1, following the retirement of Balisi Bonyongo. Bonyongo had been with the company for 26 years and had served as MD from January 2014.

World Diamond Council hopeful of Kimberley Process scope expansion in 2019

The World Diamond Council (WDC) has reiterated its support for the Kimberley Process (KP) certification scheme to end trade in conflict diamonds, while expressing concern over the progress in reforming its scope. Canadian junior to fast-track San Juan copper/gold project

The Josemaria copper/gold project in the Andes mountains of San Juan, Argentina, will be on an accelerated development schedule, as Canadian junior NGEx Resources moves to elevate the project to construction-ready level amid a global scarcity of such projects. With the long-term copper fundamentals strong and the global project pipeline at multi-decade lows, NGEx believes that construction-ready projects will attract premium valuations, CEO Wojtek Wodzicki said on Tuesday, announcing the outcomes of a prefeasibility study for Josemaria.

Poplar Grove to strike coal by December

Coal developer Paringa Resources is expecting to intersect first coal at its Poplar Grove mine, in the Illinois basin, Kentucky, by mid-December. The ASX-listed company on Wednesday told shareholders that mine ventilation and key surface infrastructure at the project have been successfully completed, with the delivery of underground mining equipment on track ahead of the start of mining activities.

Rio forecasts new aluminum capacity will be needed outside China

Aluminum producers will need to build additional smelting capacity outside of China as inventories run down in the coming two to three years, according to Rio Tinto Group. “We see aluminum demand growth being extremely healthy,” Alf Barrios, Rio’s aluminum chief executive officer, said in an interview. “People believed China was going to be a significant net exporter to the rest of the world in the future, I think people now see China being more balanced.”

Pebble project secures access for construction

The Pebble Limited Partnership (PLP) has secured the right to use portions of the Alaska Peninsula Corporation (APC) land for the construction and operation of transportation infrastructure associated with the proposed mine. PLP, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian junior Northern Dynasty, secured the rights through an agreement an Alaska Native village corporation with extensive land holdings near the Pebble site.
