State Supreme Court strikes DOT secretary appointment

COLUMBIA — The S.C. Department of Transportation Commission reappointed agency Secretary Christy Hall in an emergency meeting Wednesday after a state Supreme Court ruling struck a budget proviso from last year as unconstitutional. It allowed the governor to appoint the secretary.

Chinese panda in Belgium ‘probably’ pregnant

A female panda on loan to Belgium from China is showing telling signs of pregnancy, the Pairi Daiza zoo said on Wednesday. “At this stage, it is prudent to talk about a possible, even probable, arrival of a baby panda,” the zoo said in a statement. “If the pregnancy that seems on course is confirmed, the little one is expected by the early summer” but “could take place at any moment,” the zoo added. I collect cookbooks. My library contains everything from a dog-eared, chocolate-smudged copy of a 1960s Betty Crocker’s New Boys and Girls Cookbook to some pretty fancy and very pristine celebrity chef-type cookbooks that I have barely opened. I love pretty cookbooks, but it’s easy to tell that I love the ones that I can cook from even more.
