500 tons of hay burn at Petaluma dairy farm fire

Fire crews Wednesday descended on a dairy farm west of Petaluma to battle a blaze that burned through about 500 tons of alfalfa hay and sent smoke into neighboring farms and towns, officials said.

Half a dozen fire agencies were called to Moreda Valley Dairy on the 3200 block of Chileno Valley Road to help quell the blaze, first reported about 2:30 a.m. to the Wilmar Volunteer Fire Department.

No humans or any of the roughly 800 cows at the dairy farm were injured during the fire, including one that gave birth to a calf during the blaze, said Wilmar Fire Chief Mike Mickelson.

Sonoma County public health workers went to the area to check for air quality issues, officials said, though it wasn’t immediately clear if there were any health concerns.
