Glacier-protection Bill dropped in Chile and miners applaud

Chile’s mining industry is cheering a decision to drop a glacier-protection bill, saying the proposed rules were conceived to thwart mineral extraction. One academic says the move imperils glacial networks. Environmental Minister Marcela Cubillos requested the withdrawal of the bill from the lower house last week, nullifying former President Michelle Bachelet’s push for special protections that included banning certain activities on and around glaciers.

Kibo signs development agreement with Sepco III

Aim-listed Kibo Mining has signed a strategic development agreement (SDA) with China-based Sepco III to work towards enhancing Kibo’s strategy and the development of its portfolio of energy projects. As part of the SDA, Sepco III has committed to a two-stage equity investment in Kibo.

Spanish cattle farmers are worrying about nearby uranium mines

Maria Jose Alamo, whose 120 cattle graze on land close to the only major new uranium mine being developed in the world, is worried. “I myself wouldn’t buy the meat of cattle raised close to such a mine,” said Alamo, 48, in an interview at a cafe in the hamlet of Banos de Retortillo, in Western Spain, close to the site. “So I suppose people would do the same with mine -- it would generate a stigma.”
